Petaling Jaya Taman Paramount April 2026 \u2014 AweGallery presents Thi Kong a-Kia<\/em> an upcoming exhibition that unveils the remarkable collecting journey of Lim Chow Nee, an 86-year-old from Muar. Rooted in passion, intuition, and quiet perseverance, this showcase tells the story of a self-taught collector whose life has been shaped by destiny, memory and an unwavering curiosity for the past.<\/p>\n\n\n

Thi Kong a-Kia<\/em> in Hokkien refers to a God-sent child and also one who is blessed by heaven. In many ways, Lim\u2019s life reflects this belief. What began as a simple discovery, a bucket of old coins left behind by his late father, became the turning point of a lifetime. From that moment, he developed a deep fascination with stamps, letters, and antiques, slowly building a collection that now spans decades of history and heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n

Despite leaving school at Primary Two, Lim went on to assemble an extensive and meaningful archive. His journey is not defined by academic pathways but by instinct, resilience, and what many would describe as extraordinary fortune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, rare pieces seemed to find their way to him effortlessly. Entire antique collections were generously passed on by friends, and items he once only hoped to find would eventually appear within reach. This almost serendipitous path reflects the spirit of a Thi Kong a-Kia<\/em> (a child of the Sky Emperor) believed to be guided and protected by forces beyond the ordinary. Known among those close to him for his trusting and unassuming nature, it is perhaps this very openness that led him to encounter and acquire some of his most remarkable finds.<\/p>\n\n\n

OLD LETTER COLLECTION<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Among the highlights of the exhibition are historically significant pieces, such as one of the earliest known stamps in the world. A key feature of the showcase is The Penny Black, which was officially issued on 1 May 1840 in London and became valid for use on 6 May 1840. Recognised as the world\u2019s first adhesive postage stamp, it features a profile of Queen Victoria and marks the beginning of the prepaid postal system. Also on view are letters dating back to the period surrounding Malaysia\u2019s Independence, each artifact carrying with it stories of time transition and human connection, offering a rare glimpse into the past.<\/p>\n\n\n

For this exhibition, visitors will be guided through a carefully structured journey of postal history and collecting. The showcase begins with stampless letters from a time before stamps existed, featuring letter sheets sealed with wax. This is followed by the introduction of the first penny stamp and continues with the second and third penny letters, marking the evolution of early postal systems. The exhibition also includes a selection of old currency, offering further insight into historical trade and daily life. A special interactive corner invites visitors to experience traditional stamping methods inspired by old-time letters, complete with first penny stamp impressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the Collector<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Lim Chow Nee is the third of seven siblings, a devoted father of five, and a proud grandfather to eleven grandchildren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He began working at the age of 17 and went on to open his first bakery just a year later. After decades of dedication, he retired at the age of 72.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 59, he founded a choir which he continues to be actively involved in today. The choir has since performed in many countries, reflecting its enduring passion for music and community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 82, he ventured into a new chapter by opening his first antique shop in Muar, further deepening his lifelong love for collecting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, his collection has grown to over 20,000 pieces, and he continues to expand it with great enthusiasm. To Mr Lim, each item holds its own story and significance, making his collection truly priceless and beyond any fixed valuation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
