The two-day lion dance competition concluded with enthusiastic cheers At Sungei Wang Plaza

SMJK Chong Hwa Dragon and Lion Dance and Persatuan Sukan China Sungai Besi Crowned Champions

For the first time, the event expanded into a dual-format competition, with the 1st Interschool National Traditional Lion Dance Competition held on Saturday, 28 June 2025, followed by the 4th National Traditional Lion Dance Competition on Sunday, 29 June 2025. The two-day event was staged at the Main Entrance of Sungei Wang Plaza and attracted lion dance enthusiasts from across Malaysia to witness a spectacular cultural showcase.

Organised by Sungei Wang Plaza, in collaboration with Federation of Selangor and Federal Territory Dragon and Lion Dance Association, the dual event united both professional lion dance troupes and aspiring student teams in a celebration of traditional artistry. Both competitions were officially launched by the Association’s Chairman, Mr Leong Lik Thong PJK.

1st Sungei Wang Plaza Interschool National Traditional Lion Dance Competition 2025

The first-ever National Interschool Traditional Lion Dance Competition began on 28 June 2025 at 1.00 PM, with student teams from secondary schools across Malaysia taking part. These young performers impressed the audience with their passion and creativity, showing their love for Chinese culture. After a full day of exciting performances, SMJK Chong Hwa Dragon and Lion Dance won the championship with an outstanding score of 8.29, and received a cash prize of RM2,000. Sekolah Menengah Pin Hua Klang, Selangor – Team A came in second, winning a cash prize of RM1,500, while Kuen Cheng High School Dragon and Lion Dance Club took third place and received a cash prize of RM1,000. Other teams awarded consolation prizes of RM500 to recognise their hard work and efforts in keeping the lion dance tradition alive. All prizes were presented by Mr. Zulhelmi bin Zakaria, Senior Principal Assistant Secretary, International Relations Division (Culture) of Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr. Leong Lik Thong, PJK, Chairman of Federation of Selangor and Federal Territory Dragon and Lion Dance Association, Mr. Ng Yih Chen, Committee Member of Sungei Wang Plaza Management Corporation & Lion Dance Association Adviser, and Mr. Joseph Teo, General Manager of Sungei Wang Plaza.

4th Sungei Wang Plaza National Traditional Lion Dance Competition 2025

The following day, 4th Sungei Wang Plaza National Traditional Lion Dance Competition took place at 10.00 AM. The competition brought together 20 professional lion dance teams from across Malaysia. The atmosphere was lively, with an enthusiastic crowd and constant applause throughout the day. After several rounds of impressive performances, Persatuan Sukan China Sungai Besi stood out with a score of 9.18, winning the championship title and a RM4,000 cash prize. Kelab Sukan dan Sosial Seri Ledang Tangkak Johor won second place, receiving cash prize of RM3,000, while Persatuan Tarian Singa Xin Sheng Yong Peng Johor took third place, receiving cash prize of RM1,500. Other participating teams were also recognised for their excellent efforts, receiving consolation prizes of RM800 and finalist prizes of RM300. All prizes were presented by Yang Berusaha Dr. Christina Yeo Ken Yin, Undersecretary, International Relations Division (Culture) of Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Encik Dharzuky bin Daud @ Zakaria, Director of National Fitness Division from Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia, Mr. Leong Lik Thong, PJK, Chairman of Federation of Selangor and Federal Territory Dragon and Lion Dance Association, Mr. Ng Yih Chen, Committee Member of Sungei Wang Plaza Management Corporation & Lion Dance Association Adviser, and Mr. Joseph Teo, General Manager of Sungei Wang Plaza.

Mr. Joseph Teo, General Manager of Sungei Wang Plaza, said: “This year, we introduced the interschool category for the first time, providing young people a valuable opportunity to take part in a traditional cultural competition.
