SHAH ALAM, 12 JUNE 2024 – Registration to compete in Malaysia’s most lucrative online racing series in the country, the Toyota Gazoo Racing GT Cup Malaysia series, is now open, with the finalists this year being in the running for what will be the most lucrative and rewarding experience.
From RM70,000 in 2018 when the series was first introduced – then known as the Toyota GR Velocity eSports Championship – to RM120,500 in the Toyota GR GT Cup Malaysia this year!
With an average of 1,000 participants every season, the Qualifiers, which start on 22 June 2024, will narrow down the competition to the 40 of Malaysia’s fastest simulator racers for the Grand Finals to be held from 27-28 July at Sunway University. The two-day finale will see the top 20 racers in the Quarter-Final automatically advancing to the Semi-Final in another showdown to find the ten fastest racers for the glory of being crowned the 2024 Toyota GR GT Cup Malaysia champion.
As the only online racing series or competition in Malaysia, supported by a carmaker since 2018, the Toyota GR GT Cup Malaysia series attracts more than 3 million online viewers.
Last year, Taj Izrin Aiman Taj Madira clinched his third overall title to become the most decorated Toyota GR GT Cup Malaysia racer since the event was first introduced. Clinching second and third respectively, was Dhanesh Wigneswaran and Chong Kai Chang. The three drivers went on to represent Malaysia in the Toyota GR GT Cup Asia and were crowned runners-up in the team category. This year’s top three winners will also represent Malaysia in the regional competition and will also be in the running to compete in the World Finals.
Season 7 will also see the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing roving truck returning to make stops at eight universities in Peninsular Malaysia – Sunway University, UiTM Pasir Gudang, MMU Cyberjaya, UNITAR, UiTM Shah Alam, I-JI<M Bangi, Gombak and USM Nibong Tebal.
The GR Tour, held for the first time last year, brings the simulated racing experience to undergraduates and identifies potential racing talent. The top 10 undergraduate racers from the tour will also compete in this year’s Toyota GR GT Cup Malaysia series Grand Finals.
“The last seven years have been an exciting journey not only for online racing enthusiasts but also for us at Toyota. Our foray into Malaysian motorsports has always been to contribute to making it more dynamic. We continue to invest and expand our initiatives beyond just organizing a onemake saloon car racing series and also include online racing. Today, we also emphasize creating a foundation to help develop young drivers with the potential to transform their passion into a profession,” said UMW Toyota Motor President Datuk Ravindran K.
“The combination of physical and online racing activities has also enabled even simulator racers to make a successful transition to saloon car racing, and several outstanding individuals have even progressed to compete and win on the racing track internationally on their own and beyond Toyota’s existing programs.
“For those who harbor the same dream, the Toyota GR GT Cup Malaysia online racing series is essentially the first important step towards this.”
