KUALA LUMPUR, 18 SEPTEMBER 2026 – Canteen Malaya has opened its doors along Jalan Alor , bringing a new seafood dining experience to the street’s mix of Malaysian diners and international visitors. The restaurant offers fresh, quality Malaysian seafood in a comfortable, air-conditioned setting, designed for long, unhurried meals rather than the fast turnover of a typical street-side stall.
At the center of the concept are Canteen Malaya’s live seafood selection and open kitchen, an approach that puts diners closer to their food from the moment they choose it to the moment it’s served.
“Our focus is simple: to serve fresh, honest seafood to everyday diners,” said Ms Patricia Wong, Management Representative of Canteen

“Canteen Malaya was created specifically for Jalan Alor – a street that welcomes Malaysians and visitors from around the world in search of good local food. We wanted an open kitchen where guests can watch their seafood being prepared, in a space where they can take their time over a meal.”
Long known among locals and tourists alike for its open-air seafood stalls and lively hawker atmosphere, Jalan Alor’s spirit carries indoors at Canteen Malaya, in a calmer, more contemporary setting. Designed around a central garden filled with lush greenery and natural light from the skylight above, the space pairs warm wood finishes and earthy tones with an open, multi-level layout, creating a sense of calm within the bustle of Jalan Alor.
Guests can select their own catch – from crab and tiger prawns to fresh fish – before it is cooked to order in full view of the dining floor via the restaurant’s open kitchen. Crab takes centre stage on the menu, with more than 30 flavours and preparations, including 12 signature creations encompassing Salted Egg Crab, Kam Heong Crab, Sour and Spicy Crab, Indonesian Crab, and White Pepper Crab. Beyond its signature crab selection, diners can also enjoy giant tiger prawns, fresh tank-to-table fish prepared in a variety of styles, and succulent steamed clams and squid.
The restaurant spans four levels and seats up to 700 guests. The basement houses the main kitchen; the ground floor is the primary dining area; the first floor adds further dining space and private rooms; and the second floor holds an event hall for up to 250 guests, positioning Canteen Malaya for everything from everyday meals to private functions and larger celebrations.
