Kuala Lumpur, 18 August 2024 – The highly anticipated Sungei Wang Plaza National Traditional Lion Dance Competition returned for its third edition last weekend, captivating audiences with two days of vibrant performances. Held from 17 to 18 August 2024 at the Main Entrance of Sungei Wang Plaza, this annual event showcased the rich cultural heritage of lion dancing, drawing participation from across Malaysia.
National Traditional Lion Dance Competition 2024 was organized by Sungei Wang Plaza in collaboration with the Federation of Selangor and Federal Territory Dragon and Lion Dance Association, the competition welcomed 20 esteemed lion dance troupes from all over the country, each vying for the coveted Champion title.
The competition was successfully officiated on 17 August 2024 (Saturday) at 1 pm by Mr Leong Lik Thong PJK, Chairman of the Federation of Selangor and Federal Territory Dragon and Lion Dance Association. The event concluded on 18 August 2024 (Sunday) with a grand Prize Presentation Ceremony at 5.30 pm, which included a captivating Chinese drumming performance. The prizes were presented by Mr Eric The Hoong Keat, Assistant and representative of Yang Berhormat Tuan Fong Kui Lun, Member of Parliament for Bukit Bintang.
Mr Joseph Teo, General Manager of Sungei Wang Plaza who was also present at the event expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “Following the overwhelming response from both the public and participants last year, we were excited to host the third edition of this traditional lion dance competition. We believe that this event not only draws shoppers to the Bukit Bintang area but also serves as an eye-opener for tourists visiting Kuala Lumpur. Most importantly, it continues to promote the significance of traditional Chinese culture and provides a platform for lion dance troupes to showcase their talents and gain competitive experience.”
After two days of intense competition, Penang Ching Xing Sport and Culture Centre emerged victorious, securing the Champion Title along with a cash prize of RM4,000, presented by Mr Eric The Hoong Keat. Persatuan Tarian Naga Dan Singa Tangkak Jin Shan, Johor claimed the 1st runner-up position with a cash prize of RM3,000, while Persatuan Kebudayaan Kepong Hong Teck took the 2nd runner-up spot, earning RM1,500. These awards were presented by Mr Leong Kok Wah, the Treasurer of Federal Territory Dragon and Lion Dance Association and representative of the Association’s Chairman, Mr Leong Lik Thong PJK. Consolation prizes of RM800 and finalist prizes of RM300 were also awarded to participating troupes by Mr Ng Yih Chen and Mr Joseph Teo, recognizing their efforts and dedication.
